Songs and Music and Joyce

James Joyce liked singing and used and referred to many popular songs in his works.
These included:-
1. The Man who Broke the bank at Monte Carlo
(sung by Joyce himself and referred to in Ulysses)
2. Love's Old Sweet Song
(Song most identified with Ulysses and particularly Molly Bloom)
3 La ci darem la mano from Don Govanni
(This duet from Mozart's Opera is one of the main songs in Ulysses, mentioned in seven episodes.
4. Seaside Girls
(Published in 1899 and sung by Vesta Tilley..  again a major musical reference in Ulysses)
5. The Salley Gardens : words by W.B. Yeats
(sung by Joyce himself in the Concert Rooms in Pearse Street. Nora was in the audience and six weeks later they departed for Italy together, never to return.

........  more about songs and music later!
